There is no doubt that replacement windows add aesthetic value to your home. They come in every style and size imaginable. However, window replacement can do far more than just beautify your home. When you choose the right replacement windows, and equally important, choose the right company to install them, they can provide added protection in the event of a hurricane or tornado, improve energy efficiency, and even increase the value of your home.
Let’s face it—the Tampa Bay area endures brutal weather in the form of the scorching sun, pouring rain, and, more often than any of us would like, hurricane-force winds. This wreaks havoc on ordinary windows which can lead to water damage and toxic mold. But you can protect yourself from these risks.
Impact resistant windows protect your home
The right windows can make all the difference in whether or not your home survives a hurricane.
When powerful winds enter a home through broken windows or doors, chances are there’s going to be catastrophic damage. The significantly increased pressure can more easily lift your roof off of your home. Even if your roof stays in place, the damage done to the home’s interior from the winds and rain—well, you’re aware of what can happen. It’s enough to make you shudder just thinking about it.
Impact resistant windows aren’t going to fly apart during a hurricane. Reece windows are virtually indestructible.
As a matter of fact, our windows are an added source of protection against home invasion. Intruders consider windows easy access. Smash the glass. Get in. Get out. Piece of cake. However, they’ll likely change their tune quickly when striking the window results in a dull thud rather than breaking glass.
Whether it’s from storm-tossed debris or the threat of forced entry, your family will undoubtedly be safer after your new windows are installed.
Not only that but once your windows allow moisture to enter your home, the threat of mold is a serious one. It reduces air quality and causes health problems that can become severe. Allergic reactions are most prominent and include watery eyes, runny noses, wheezing, coughing, difficulty breathing, fatigue, and headaches. Reece windows protect you against that threat too.
How do we do it?
We manufacture our windows using the latest technology.
Reece windows are constructed by bonding two sheets of tempered glass to either side of a high-tech polymer inner layer.
Tempered glass breaks apart in small pellets rather than shards. This coupled with the exceptional reinforcing strength of the high-tech polymer sandwiched in between ensures that the glass will be held together even if it’s completely shattered. This helps to reduce or even prevent damage and injuries caused by wind, water, and debris entering your home.
To earn a hurricane resistant rating, windows must pass a series of tests as stipulated by the FBC (Florida Building Code). These tests include both the large and small missile tests to see how they withstand storm-tossed debris. But, that’s not all. They’re also tested to ensure wind and water-resistance.
Our impact resistant windows withstand an impact comparable to that of a 2x4 driven by hurricane-force winds covering the distance of an astonishing 50 feet per second! Once they survive that, they go on for small missile testing. This test consists of hurling steel ball bearings simultaneously with enough force to cover 80 feet per second.
How do they achieve those speeds?
They use a cannon.
Lastly, the entire replacement window unit must survive stringent wind and water-resistant tests.
Your home may not be completely hurricane-proof, but replacing your windows with ours will provide a significant improvement in safety.
Energy efficient windows reduce energy costs
While hurricanes may not be a daily occurrence, energy consumption is. Especially in Florida. This is another area where our windows excel thanks to their high insulation value.
We’ve all seen images of the loss of energy through our windows represented by dollar signs floating through the glass and up into the atmosphere. Of course, this is especially the case in older homes! Even if you replaced your windows years ago to install energy-efficient windows, advancements in technology have made great strides in increased energy efficiency saving homeowners as much as 30% in their heating and cooling costs.
Because of our glass/polymer/glass layered construction, and in some cases, multiple panes separated by an insulating pocket of air, our replacement windows are shockingly effective at maintaining the temperature you want indoors. In addition, a window’s frame represents about 25% of the entire window unit. Our vinyl frames play a part in reducing your energy costs by providing insulation and energy-efficient glazing reduces condensation.
Reece windows provide an energy-efficiency rating that meets or exceeds Energy Star guidelines.
We’ll also mention that our windows do an excellent job of blocking outside noise. You’ll be able to enjoy relaxing inside your home without the distraction of neighborhood kids playing, yard mowing, dogs barking, or even construction going on across the street!
Moreover, our windows block nearly 100% of the sun’s harmful UV rays. That means no more worries about faded furniture, carpet, or wall decor.
Benefits of vinyl window frames
Today, vinyl windows are considered more trendy than wood windows and are a popular choice for both new homes and old. Vinyl window frames are very energy efficient. They’re very low maintenance because there’s nothing to do to keep them in good shape. A quick wash periodically is more to keep your windows looking new than a protective measure. Also, vinyl windows are less expensive than wood windows.
Vinyl window frames are relatively new to the industry. After World War II, Germany began using a new thermoplastic, vinyl framing for windows because there was a shortage of wood and aluminum in the country. BF Goodrich began using vinyl for windows here in the United States a decade later.
The construction and technology continued to improve over time and vinyl windows started becoming more popular in the 1980s. By the mid-1990s, most window manufacturers offered vinyl replacement windows in addition to wood and metal frames.
Vinyl vs. wood frame windows
Wood windows are certainly beautiful and remain a popular choice for homeowners. However, they require routine maintenance or they will eventually fail. Moreover, maintenance is something many of us are likely to put on the back burner because life gets busy!
Replacing damaged caulk is important to maintain water resistance. They must be painted or stained to prevent wood rot and decay. Once that begins to happen, continued exposure to moisture expedites the process. Not only will moisture destroy the wood, but it makes its way into the interior of your home leaving you susceptible to mold and mildew. It continues to cause damage that eventually weakens your home’s structural integrity.
Wood replacement windows are also more expensive than vinyl windows and aren’t as easy to install. You might want to consider the termite factor as well. Florida’s dampwood termites are a problem in their own right, but did you know they are attracted to lights left on at night? Short of a power outage, none of us are prone to sit around in the dark.
Vinyl vs. aluminum frame windows
Aluminum windows are the most economical choice. They’re low maintenance and extremely durable. However, they aren’t the best choice for Florida homeowners by any means.
The reason is simple. Aluminum conducts heat and cold better than any other building material. Actually, that fact makes this window type an extremely poor choice for energy efficiency no matter where you live. Unless, of course, you live in San Francisco or some other place that has little fluctuation in temperature.
Vinyl frame windows
Of the three, vinyl windows fill the bill as an overall solid choice. Our high-quality vinyl windows are energy-efficient, cost-competitive, and extremely durable.
They don’t require the maintenance of wood windows and are easy to clean. A quick wash and they look as good as new year after year.
The salt in the air here has a habit of settling on everything. Another benefit of vinyl replacement windows that specifically speaks to Floridians is that salt’s corrosive nature doesn’t affect them as it does wood and aluminum. Even so, it’s recommended that Florida homeowners clean the exterior of their homes at least three times a year.
But, we already mentioned that life gets busy—at least you know your windows are safe from salt’s destructive qualities if you just can’t find the time.
Our vinyl windows are constructed using only the highest quality vinyl. We use a heat welding method to attach the frame pieces together. This process actually makes our frame one piece of vinyl. You can see how this process greatly strengthens the unit increasing the storm protection value.
DIY vs pro
We often get asked whether or not someone who’s an avid DIY’er should round up some buddies and tackle the job on their own.
While it may be tempting, we don’t recommend it. Even though your new replacement windows are impact-resistant, you have to remove the old ones. Moreover, you’ll be working from a ladder. The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons reports that approximately 500,000 people are treated for ladder-related injuries every year.
You don’t want to be one of them.
Most ladder accidents occurred when carrying something up or down the ladder. It’s best to leave the job to a professionally trained installer.
In addition, window installation requires precision. An improperly installed window effects the performance. It also increases the likelihood of future problems due to moisture entering the interior of your home. We’ve already mentioned the dangers of mold growth. Moisture also causes major structural damage when left unaddressed.
Even if your windows aren’t wood, the majority of your home is built with lumber. Once moisture makes its way to the interior structure of your home, mold is not your only concern. When wood rot sets in, it actually spreads of its own accord. By the time it’s discovered, the repair costs can be massive.
All things considered, it’s important that your windows are installed by experts.

The secret weapon
From our initial consultation, our goal is to provide you with exceptional customer service. As a matter of fact, that was one of Michael Reece, Sr.‘s main goals when founding Reece Builders/Windows, Inc. in 1972. He wanted to provide his customers with high-quality windows and doors guaranteed to last a lifetime. However, he also understood the importance of complete customer satisfaction.
It was there he may have hit upon a secret weapon.
Actually, it kind of happened naturally.
His son, Randy, runs the company now. Other than keeping up with the latest technology in the window industry, nothing much has changed. As a matter of fact, the secret weapon is just common knowledge by now.
You want in on the secret, don’t you?
At Reece, we make it a point to ensure that our teams realize how much we value their contributions to our company’s success. Valued employees vest themselves in their jobs. They strive for excellence and they’re always willing to go that extra mile.
Our customers reap the benefit two-fold. Of course, they receive beautiful new impact resistant windows. Moreover, they receive exceptional customer service from every Reece employee they come into contact with.
It’s hard to beat that.
Our customer service team will help you with any questions regarding which windows to choose that will fit your budget. We have many styles to choose from and, because we make them ourselves, custom windows aren’t out of the question. When you’re ready, they schedule your installation at a time that’s convenient for you.
We’ll arrive when we say we will and professionally and efficiently install your new windows. If for any reason we’re unable to meet our obligation—which, of course, would most likely be due to the weather—you’ll know it as soon as we do.
We greatly appreciate your business. The least we can do to show it is to be there on time!
In fact, we have no doubt that it’s thanks to our customers that we have become one of the leading window and door companies in the surrounding area. They are a great source of advertisement!
Once they’ve had the Reece experience, they can’t help but share the news with family and friends who remember that story and choose us for their future needs.
We thank them for that!
How long do Reece windows last?
In short, Reece windows are expertly installed to last a lifetime. So are our doors, by the way.
We aren’t kidding around when we say our windows are of the highest quality. They’re designed to last you a lifetime and professionally installed with the same goal in mind.
We stand by that.
All our customers receive the Reece Lifetime Guarantee that includes our workmanship. Actually, make that a double Lifetime Guarantee. If you decide to sell your home in the future, your guarantee transfers to the new homeowner.
That’s an attractive selling point! Reece replacement windows can actually increase the value of your home at resale. Moreover, many insurance companies offer lower premiums for added protection from both hurricanes and home invasion. Check with your agent to see if you qualify.
As a matter of fact, you might check with them first. That way you’ll have the requirements necessary to qualify with you when we meet for our consultation. And in the event that they don’t offer premium discounts, you may decide it’s time to consider a different insurance company.
We check back with our customers about a week after we complete their installation to see that everything is working properly. We don’t mean to toot our own horn here but if we checked in again years later, we’d still hear a satisfied customer on the other end of the line.
We’re certain of that.
